Builder Tips:

  • Ask for separate pricing for supply and install — some framers prefer to install themselves. Get bids based on structural drawings or redlines from your engineer. Verify if prime coat or galvanization is included, especially if any steel will be exposed. Expect lead times of 2–4 weeks depending on steel yard backlog.

Real World Example:

A 4,200 sq ft home with 2 large steel beams and 4 columns for open great room span and garage door headers:

- Fabrication & delivery: $6,200

- Installation & welding: $2,800

- Total structural steel package: ~$9,000

FAQ

Q: Can farmers install the steel?

A: Sometimes, but welding or beam splicing may require a certified steel crew.

Q: Is steel always necessary?

A: No. It’s used when spans exceed lumber capability or design requires it.

Q: Does steel need to be painted?

A: Only if it’s exposed or required by code — most interior beams are left raw or primed.

Q: What drawings are needed for bidding?

A: Structural engineer drawings or a framing layout with beam callouts are ideal.
